Watchmen is a comic series, with specifically 12 issues, which was later adapted into the film version in 2009. Watchmen can be classified under the superhero genre but it can also be seen to have a darker and sinister side to it as well.

The film is set during the cold war, and the main characters are not all the classic do-gooder types. The main vigilantes who are part of the Watchmen team but are mainly retired are the Comedian, Doctor Manhattan and Rorschach, as well as Silk Spectre II and Night Owl. Rorschach being the main vigilante who refuses to retire like the rest of the Watchmen is trying to uncover a conspiracy theory to eliminate all of the previous Watchmen. In the end he teams up with Night Owl and they discover the villain Veidt is behind the murders of the former Watchmen and they seek to foil his plan of nuclear war. In the end the outlawed Watchmen are revered for their bravery in stopping Veidt and his evil plans.
